Koh Samui is one of Thailand's most popular islands among expats, and the long-term rental market here is well established. Whether you're planning to stay for a few months or several years, the island offers plenty of options — from compact apartments to spacious villas with private pools.

Types of Rental Property

Pool villas are the most popular choice for expats with families or those who value privacy. Villas typically have 2–4 bedrooms, a private pool, a garden and covered parking. Monthly rents start at around 25,000 THB for a small two-bedroom villa in quieter areas, rising to 80,000–150,000 THB for modern sea-view properties in Chaweng or Bophut.

Houses and townhouses in residential neighbourhoods (moo baan) are a more affordable option, often renting for 12,000–30,000 THB per month. A good choice for those who want to live among locals and experience everyday island life.

Apartments and condominiums are less common on Samui than on the mainland, but can be found in Chaweng and Lamai, starting from around 8,000 THB per month for a studio.

Bophut and Maenam (north coast) are calm neighbourhoods favoured by families, with international schools, supermarkets and local markets nearby. Rents are moderate.

Chaweng is the most vibrant district — convenient for shopping, dining and transport, but noisier and more expensive.

Lamai offers a good balance of amenities and relative quiet, popular with expats of all ages.

Nathon and Lipa Noi on the west coast are the quietest and most affordable areas, ideal for remote workers who don't need tourist infrastructure.

Practical Tips

Most long-term rentals are arranged through local property agents. Always inspect a property in person before paying any deposit. Request a bilingual (Thai/English) rental agreement — standard practice on the island. Photograph any existing damage before moving in. Check what utilities are included: electricity, water and internet are usually charged separately.
