Banking and Finance on Koh Samui: Accounts, Transfers and Practical Tips for Expats
Banks on Koh Samui: Bangkok Bank, KBank, SCB. How to open an account, receive transfers and manage finances as an expat on the island.
Financial matters are one of the key concerns for expats living on Koh Samui. Thailand's banking system is well developed, with major banks maintaining branches and ATMs across the island.
Banks on Samui
All major Thai banks are represented on the island. The most widely used among expats are Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn Bank (KBank), SCB and Krungthai Bank. Most ATMs accept international Visa, Mastercard and UnionPay cards, with a standard foreign-card fee of 220 THB per withdrawal.
Opening a Bank Account
Expats with a valid visa can open a Thai bank account. You will typically need: your passport, a Thai SIM card for verification, and sometimes proof of address or a reference letter. Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn Bank are generally the most accommodating for expats. Visit a main branch in Chaweng or Nathon rather than a small booth.
International Transfers
Receiving money from abroad via SWIFT typically takes 1–3 business days. Many expats use services such as Wise or Revolut for better exchange rates and lower fees compared to bank transfers.
Everyday Payments
PromptPay is the Thai instant-transfer system, linked to a phone number or ID. QR payments are accepted in shops, restaurants and many markets. For monthly bills (rent, electricity), set up automatic payments through your bank's mobile app.
Practical Tips
Keep a few thousand baht in cash for small markets and street vendors. Notify your home bank of your long stay in Thailand to prevent card blocks. Use ATMs inside guarded shopping centres or at bank branches for safety.
