Cycling in Koh Samui
Cycling on Koh Samui: north shore and east coast routes, bike rental guide, safety tips and best season for riding.
Cycling is a growing way to explore Koh Samui beyond the beach. The north coast road and parts of the interior offer accessible routes for leisure riders — the key is choosing the right time of day and matching the route to your fitness level.
Where to Ride
North Shore (Mae Nam – Bophut)
The most beginner-friendly route: a relatively flat coastal road with scenic views across to Koh Phangan. Mae Nam to Bophut is roughly 8 km one way; extending the ride toward Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) makes a pleasant full-day loop.
East Coast (Chaweng – Lamai)
A longer, more popular stretch (~12 km) but also busier with traffic. Early morning (before 08:00) or late afternoon (after 17:00) is recommended to avoid the peak songthaew flow.
Interior Roads
Mountain roads cutting through Samui's hilly centre offer panoramic views but involve climbs of 200 m+. Best suited to confident cyclists.
Bike Rentals
Rentals are available in Bophut, Mae Nam, and Chaweng. Standard road bikes and hybrids typically cost 150–250 THB per day. Mountain bikes run 300–500 THB/day. E-bikes are increasingly available at 400–600 THB/day.
Safety Tips
- Thailand drives on the left; take a short warm-up spin on a quiet road first.
- Ride early (before 08:00) or in the evening (after 17:00) to avoid peak traffic.
- Ask about helmets at the rental — most shops include them.
- Bring sunscreen and water; heat on exposed coastal roads can be intense.
Best Season
The dry season (January–May) suits east and south coast rides. During the northeast monsoon (November–January) the north and west routes see less rainfall and are preferable.
