If there's one place on Koh Samui with genuine character and atmosphere, it's Fisherman Village in Bophut. This small village on the north coast features Chinese-Thai wooden houses standing directly over the water, and its Friday market draws visitors from across the island.

What Is Fisherman Village

Bophut is a village on Samui's north shore, about 15 minutes west of Chaweng. Its heart is a waterfront stretch of two-storey wooden buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries, built by Chinese merchants. Today they house restaurants, cafes, boutiques, and small hotels.

The village is quiet and non-touristy on weekdays. On Fridays, it's an entirely different story.

Friday Walking Street

Every Friday, the waterfront transforms into a market. Vendors line the pavements, food stalls appear, and musicians take up positions along the street. The market runs from 5pm to 10–11pm.

What's on sale:

  • Clothing and accessories — cotton shirts, skirts, hats
  • Handmade jewellery — silver, natural stones, beaded pieces
  • Paintings and prints — works by local artists
  • Spices and condiments — Thai curry pastes, kaffir lime, aromatic blends
  • Street food — pad thai, grilled seafood, roti, tropical smoothies

Bargaining is appropriate for jewellery, clothing, and art. Food prices are fixed.

Where to Eat in Fisherman Village

Bophut's restaurants are among the best on the north coast. A few places stand out:

The Fisherman

A fine-dining restaurant right on the water with views across the bay. The menu offers Thai cuisine with creative interpretations. Prices are high, but perfect for a special evening. Reserve in advance.

Happy Elephant

A popular restaurant with a "green Thai cuisine" approach. Excellent selection of curries and vegetarian dishes. Mid-range prices, generous portions.

Cafes and Bakeries

Several cafes serve good coffee and breakfast. A morning visit — before the tourists arrive — with a seat on a terrace over the water is a highlight in itself.

Bophut Beach

The beach in front of the village is calm and not ideal for swimming (shallow, some seagrass) — but an evening stroll with the sunset at your back is lovely. From Bophut beach you can see the silhouette of Ko Phangan island in the dusk.

How to Get There

From Chaweng — 15 minutes by taxi (around 200–250 baht). From the airport — 20 minutes. From Mae Nam — 10 minutes.

The Chaweng–Nathon songthaew passes through Bophut, but on Friday evenings it's unreliable — better to use Grab or a regular taxi. Arrange a return journey with your driver when heading back to Chaweng in the evening.

When to Visit

Friday evening — the market; the most lively time.
Weekday mornings — quiet, cafes open, atmospheric photos without crowds.
Sunday — the village is nearly empty; restaurants are open.

Avoid arriving after 8:30pm on Friday — by then the market is crowded and difficult to navigate.

Tips

  • Arrive at 5:30pm — the market has just opened, better selection, fewer crowds.
  • Cash is essential — ATMs are available at the village entrance.
  • Parking: small car park near the market; arriving by motorbike is easy.
  • Photography: the waterfront buildings look beautiful in golden-hour light (around 5:30–6pm).
