Types of Fishing

Big-Game Offshore Fishing

Deep-sea charters venture 20–40 km offshore in search of sailfish, marlin, yellowfin tuna, and wahoo. The peak season runs from April to September when warm currents push larger fish into the gulf. A 4–8 hour trip costs roughly 5,000–18,000 THB per boat (usually 4–6 anglers).

Reef Fishing

Dropping lines to 20–50 m at the reefs around Koh Tan, Koh Madsum, and offshore pinnacles yields snapper, grouper, barracuda, and sea bass. Suitable for all skill levels and typically organized as 3–5 hour trips close to shore.

Night Squid & Buoy Fishing

Lit buoys attract plankton, which in turn draws squid and small fish — and the predators that follow. Evening trips depart after 19:00 and return by midnight. A popular option for travellers looking for something out of the ordinary.

Best Season

Fishing is available year-round but conditions vary. April–October is prime for offshore fishing: calm seas and big fish in the gulf. November–March favours reef and inshore fishing; offshore trips may be limited by swell. December–January is excellent for octopus and cuttlefish off the north coast.

What's Included

Most operators provide tackle, bait, soft drinks, and a light lunch. Trophy fish can usually be kept or cooked at a nearby fishing village — confirm this when booking. Reef fishing tours are safe for children over 6 in calm conditions.

How to Choose a Tour

When selecting a fishing trip, check the age and condition of the vessel, whether it carries GPS and radio, and how many anglers will be aboard — fewer people means more room to cast. Ask the operator which target species are running in the current season: not all fish are available year-round. Most charters depart from Nathon port or Chaweng pier in the early morning (05:00–06:00) to catch peak feeding activity. Confirm whether bait, tackle, and transfers are included, as some operators charge these separately.

Licences & Rules

Foreign tourists generally don't need a separate fishing licence in Thailand — organised charters operate under the operator's own licence. Shore fishing is allowed in most areas. Fishing within Ang Thong Marine National Park requires a special permit — confirm with the operator before booking.
