Koh Samui is an island in the Gulf of Thailand, which means you can't reach it directly from abroad without at least one change of transport. The good news is that there are several options to suit different budgets and comfort levels.

By Plane

The quickest option. Bangkok Airways operates direct flights to Samui Airport (USM) from Suvarnabhumi (Bangkok, BKK) — about 1 hour 15 minutes. Samui's boutique airport is famously beautiful, with open-air check-in pavilions under palm-leaf roofs. Direct tickets cost more than budget alternatives, but there are no transfers. A cheaper approach is to fly to Surat Thani (SUF) or Nakhon Si Thammarat (NST) on Thai Lion Air, AirAsia or Nok Air, then take a connecting bus and ferry to Samui.

By Bus and Ferry

The most budget-friendly route from Bangkok. VIP buses depart from Ekkamai or Mo Chit bus terminals and reach Donsak Ferry Pier in roughly 10–11 hours. From there, Seatran or Raja Ferry crosses to Samui in about 1.5 hours. Night buses are popular: leave in the evening, wake up on the island. Combined 'bus + ferry' tickets are sold at travel agencies and online booking platforms.

By Train and Ferry

A train from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong or Bang Sue station reaches Surat Thani in 8–10 hours. Overnight trains with sleeper cars offer a budget-friendly and reasonably comfortable alternative to flying. From Surat Thani station, a taxi to the ferry pier takes about 30 minutes. Book sleeper berths in advance during peak season (December–March) via the State Railway of Thailand website.

By High-Speed Catamaran

Lomprayah and Seatran Express run fast catamarans from the mainland to Samui, and also connect Samui with Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Catamarans are faster than traditional ferries but more expensive. They typically arrive at Maenam Beach on the north coast of Samui.

Choosing the Right Route

Prioritise speed: direct flight from Bangkok to Samui. Prioritise budget: overnight bus from Bangkok plus ferry from Donsak — cheap and saves a night's accommodation. Prefer comfort and scenery: overnight sleeper train to Surat Thani plus a morning ferry — the views are worth the extra few hours on the road.
