Horse Riding on Koh Samui: Trail Rides Along Beaches and Through Jungle
Horse riding on Koh Samui: beach and mountain trail rides, tips, what to wear and how to choose a reputable stable.
Horse riding on Koh Samui offers a unique way to explore the island at a gentle pace. Trail rides along the water's edge or through tropical forest provide a completely different perspective on Samui compared to conventional tours. The activity is accessible to people without riding experience and to children.
What's on Offer
Several horse riding centres operate on Samui, offering rides of varying lengths:
- Short ride (30–45 minutes) — ideal for beginners and children. Includes a brief briefing, then a guided walk along the beach or a forest path.
- Medium ride (1–1.5 hours) — may cover beach, palm groves and a stretch of hill trail.
- Long tour (2–3 hours) — for more experienced riders, covering beach, jungle and scenic viewpoints.
Where to Find Stables
Horse riding centres are most common in the quieter parts of the island — Taling Ngam on the west coast, near Maenam on the north and in the central mountain area. Beach rides typically take place early morning or around sunset, when the beach is less crowded and the temperature is comfortable.
Who It Suits
Suitable for almost everyone: children from age 5–6 (with an adult), older visitors and complete beginners. An instructor will lead the horse beside you or on a lead rope if needed.
What to Wear
Long trousers are essential — shorts cause saddle rash. Closed-toe shoes with at least a small heel are a standard safety requirement. A helmet is usually provided by the stable. Bring a light long-sleeved shirt for jungle routes to protect against insects.
Animal Welfare
Choose a centre where horses look well-cared for, not overworked or underweight. Responsible stables limit daily rides, respect weight limits (typically around 90–100 kg) and do not operate during peak afternoon heat.
