Muay Thai is Thailand's national martial art, and Koh Samui offers excellent opportunities both for watching authentic fights and for learning the discipline yourself.

Fight Nights & Stadiums

Several Muay Thai stadiums operate on the island. Evening fight shows are a vivid spectacle: live wai kru ceremonial music, the pre-fight ritual, and intense rounds of striking. The main arenas are in the Chaweng area and central Samui; fight schedules are updated weekly.

Most activity desks on the island offer transfer + ticket packages. Spectator tickets typically run 700–1,500 THB depending on seat and fight card.

Training for Tourists

Several training camps on Samui welcome tourists of all experience levels. A typical tourist session covers:

  • Stretching and warm-up
  • Bag work and pad work
  • Basic punches, kicks, knees and elbows
  • Optional light sparring

A trial class (1.5–2 hours) costs approximately 400–800 THB. Weekly packages (8–10 sessions) offer a lower per-class rate.

Fitness Benefits

Muay Thai is an intense cardio workout. An hour of training burns more calories than most team sports, making it a popular alternative to jogging for tourists who want to stay active with cultural immersion.

What to Bring

Camps provide gloves, wraps, and headgear on loan. All you need is athletic shorts and a t-shirt. Women often find fitted leggings or close-fit shorts more practical than loose shorts when throwing kicks.

Programmes for Children

Several camps offer adapted sessions for children from age 6–8 upward. Junior classes focus on coordination, discipline, and confidence — without contact sparring for younger age groups.
