Parasailing is one of the most exhilarating ways to see Koh Samui from above. Rising 50–100 metres above the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Thailand, you get a bird's-eye view of the full beach, palm groves and the island's mountain ridge — a sight that's hard to forget.

How Parasailing Works

Parasailing involves being lifted into the air on a parachute canopy tethered by a line to a speedboat. You can take off from the beach or from the boat's platform, depending on the operator. The boat accelerates, the chute fills with air and you rise smoothly. A flight lasts around 10–15 minutes. Landing — back on the beach or onto the boat's platform — is gentle and controlled. Most people's nerves settle within seconds of becoming airborne.

Where to Try It

Parasailing is available at several beaches: Chaweng Beach (most popular, operators in the central section), Lamai Beach (less crowded, equally scenic) and Bophut (available during peak season).

Who Can Participate

Suitable for most adults and children above a certain age (typically 7–8 years — confirm with the operator). No physical fitness requirements. Not recommended during pregnancy, with serious cardiovascular conditions or back problems. Weight limit is usually up to 120 kg.

Cost

A single flight (10–15 minutes) starts at around 500–800 THB. Tandem parasailing (two people at once) costs slightly more and is available from most operators. Some include a GoPro photo/video package.

Safety

Choose operators with modern equipment and trained staff. The instructor will explain all signals before take-off. Best conditions are in moderate wind and calm seas — typical of Samui's dry season (November–April).

First-Time Tips

Avoid eating a heavy meal beforehand. Wear comfortable swimwear or shorts and a t-shirt. Remove glasses and hats — they can blow off in the wind. Bring cash as many operators do not accept card payments on the beach.
