Koh Samui has 25 beaches — and not all of them feel the same. Some are built for crowds and parties. Others are made for two people watching the sun drop into the Gulf of Thailand without saying a word. Here are the five beaches we recommend to couples first. --- ### Taling Ngam & Lipa Noi: The Sunset Shore The west coast of Samui is where the sun actually sets over the water. Taling Ngam and Lipa Noi sit as far from the airport and tourist strip as possible — which means quiet, slow, and genuinely peaceful. Taling Ngam is known as the Five Islands Beach: from the shore you can see a cluster of small islands silhouetted at dusk. Minimal infrastructure, a handful of boutique resorts, clean calm water. No jet skis, no speakers, no crowds. Lipa Noi, just north: fine soft sand, a gently sloping entry, almost no waves. One of the best beaches on the island for floating side by side. **Best sunset timing:** April through October, the west coast is fully sheltered, water is flat, and sunsets are outstanding. --- ### Choeng Mon: The Northern Bay In a sheltered bay on the northeast tip of the island, Choeng Mon has white sand and clear water. The bay is framed by two headlands, which keeps it calm almost year-round: no waves, transparent water, soft sandy bottom. Unlike Chaweng 15 minutes away, Choeng Mon stays quiet. Fewer hotels, fewer tourists, more stillness. A few candlelit restaurants right at the water's edge in the evenings. Good for couples who want beach living without a nightclub outside the window. --- ### Bophut: Village & Catamaran Bophut Fisherman's Village is one of Samui's most atmospheric corners — narrow streets, wooden Chinese-style shophouses, small cafés and jewellery galleries. The beach isn't ideal for swimming, but in the evenings it's where you go for atmosphere. Bophut is also the base for several sunset catamaran cruises. Two hours at sea, champagne, no shore in sight — one of the best romantic formats on the island, and surprisingly intimate. --- ### Lamai: Character and History Lamai is Samui's second largest beach — less polished than Chaweng, but with more personality. At the southern end stand the famous Hin Ta Hin Yai rock formations — natural sculptures that have become symbols of the island. Worth a stop, especially for couples with a sense of humour. The beach itself is wide with firm white sand. The northern section is quiet, with palm shade and low-key bungalows. The southern end has open-air bars and sunset restaurants right at the waterline. --- ### When to Go Best season for a romantic beach holiday on Samui: **December through April** (dry season, both coasts calm, sea clear). The west coast (Lipa Noi, Taling Ngam) is at its best **March through October**: flat water, clear sunsets. Avoid the east coast in October–November — monsoon season with heavy rain and swells. --- ### Practical Notes - East to west coast transfer: 30–40 minutes by motorbike or taxi. - Taling Ngam and Lipa Noi have limited services: bring water and snacks if spending the day. - Waterfront sunset dinners: book a day ahead, especially in high season. - Quiet beach hotels price at a premium — you're paying for the silence.
