Kids Activities in Koh Samui: What to Do with Children on the Island
What to do with children in Koh Samui: waterfalls, island hopping, elephants, cooking classes, mini golf. Schedules, age restrictions, practical tips for families.
Koh Samui is an island where children never get bored. Beyond the beach and pool, there are plenty of activities: from waterfalls and jungle to cooking classes and night markets. The key is to plan the program thoughtfully, considering children's ages and a pace that doesn't exhaust them.
Na Muang Waterfalls: A Natural Adventure
The Na Muang waterfalls are one of the island's main natural attractions, located in the center of Samui, about 10 km from Chaweng. Two waterfalls with different characters:
- Na Muang 1 — the first waterfall, lower on the hill. Easy trail, paved at the bottom. The waterfall drops into a small pool — children swim right at the base. Suitable for any age.
- Na Muang 2 — higher and more beautiful, but the trail is steep and takes 30–40 minutes. Recommended for children 6–7 and older who can walk independently. Impossible with a stroller. There's also a swimming pool at the top; the water is cooler.
Best time — morning (before 10:00) before it gets hot. Bring water, a change of clothes, and flip-flops for swimming at the waterfall.
Elephant Walks and Safari
Elephants are a special topic for children visiting Thailand for the first time. Several venues on Samui offer elephant interactions: walks, feeding, and care.
Ethical practice is gaining popularity: instead of riding, operators increasingly offer walks alongside elephants, bathing with them, and fruit feeding. Check the format with the operator — it matters from an ethical and animal welfare perspective.
Children usually remember feeding most vividly: an elephant takes a banana directly from their hand. This is safe when following the keeper's instructions.
Marine Excursions: Islands and Snorkeling
Samui is surrounded by smaller islands — Koh Tao, Koh Nang Yuan, Koh Phangan, the Ang Thong archipelago. Day-long marine excursions are one of the best ways to diversify a beach holiday.
Ang Thong Marine National Park — an archipelago of 42 islands, emerald lagoons, white sand, snorkeling. Tour takes a full day. Suitable for children 5–6 and older who can swim a bit. Boats are fast, and there can be some rolling in rough conditions — factor in motion sickness if it's a concern.
Snorkeling near Koh Tao — coral reefs, colorful fish, sea turtles. Day-long excursion. Fins and masks are usually provided on board.
For very young children (under 4), it's better to choose calm, short longtail boat trips along the shore or to the nearest empty beach.
Cooking Class for Children
Thai cuisine is an excellent way to introduce older children (7–8 and up) to local culture. Several cooking schools on Samui welcome families. Programs usually include:
- Visiting a local market for ingredients
- Simple dishes (rice, soups, Thai curries)
- Making Pad Thai or Tom Yam under chef guidance
Children cook and then eat the result themselves — high motivation guaranteed. Spice levels in children's versions of dishes are adjustable.
Mini Golf and Entertainment Centers
Samui has several mini golf courses, bowling alleys, and entertainment centers with arcade games. This is a good option for a rainy day or an evening when the beach is no longer appealing.
Chaweng has the widest selection of such venues. Shopping centers on the island (Central Festival, Big C) also have play zones for children.
Traditional Thai Massage (for Parents)
While children are occupied with activities, parents can take advantage of the beloved Thai bonus — massage. Hundreds of massage parlors operate on Samui, many right on the beach. Affordable, pleasant, and just an hour — fits perfectly into a family's daily schedule.
Night Markets: A Gastronomic Journey
Samui's night markets are an unforgettable experience for children. Street food, bright lights, aromas, vendors, exotic fruits — all of this fascinates children just as much as adults.
Most popular: Chaweng market (daily), Lamai market (Saturday/Sunday), Bophut Walking Street (Friday). Children usually find something familiar — rice, chicken, noodles — plus can try adventurous experiments with local dishes.
Building a Week-Long Program
A balanced schedule for a family with children 4–10 for 7 days:
- 3 days — beach (different beaches with different characters)
- 1 day — zoo + waterfall
- 1 day — marine excursion
- 1 day — waterpark
- 1 day — night market in the evening, morning rest
Don't overpack the schedule. Children need "do nothing" time — at the villa, in the pool, playing with a ball on the beach. Those moments are often the ones they remember most fondly.
