Koh Samui is one of the few Thai islands with its own airport. The boutique airport in Bophut, built and operated by Bangkok Airways, is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful small airports in the world: open-air wooden terminals, tropical gardens woven into the terminal grounds, and natural airflow instead of hermetically sealed corridors.

Airlines and Routes

Flights from Bangkok

The primary route is Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi, BKK) → Koh Samui (USM). This is served exclusively by Bangkok Airways — the airline owns the airport and holds the only slots for regular scheduled services from Suvarnabhumi.

  • Schedule: 8–12 flights per day depending on season.
  • Flight time: approximately 1 hour.
  • Prices (2025): ฿2,500–6,000 one-way (varies by fare class, booking lead time, and season). Sale fares can drop to ฿1,500 but sell out quickly.
  • Baggage: Bangkok Airways' base fare includes 20 kg checked baggage + 7 kg carry-on — more generous than most low-cost carriers.

From Don Mueang Airport (DMK, home to most budget carriers) there are no direct flights to Samui. From Don Mueang, you need to either transfer to Suvarnabhumi and fly Bangkok Airways, or fly to Surat Thani on Nok Air or AirAsia and continue to Samui by ferry or bus.

Domestic Routes from Other Thai Cities

  • Phuket (HKT) → Samui: Bangkok Airways, ~50 minutes. Convenient for travellers arriving in Thailand on charter flights to Phuket who want to reach Samui.
  • Chiang Mai (CNX) → Samui: Bangkok Airways — direct service in peak season or via Bangkok depending on schedule.

International Routes

Koh Samui has direct international connections, mainly within Southeast Asia:

  • Singapore (SIN): Scoot (low-cost) — several flights per week, ~1.5–2 hours.
  • Kuala Lumpur (KUL): Firefly / Malindo Air — direct flights several times per week.
  • Hong Kong (HKG): Bangkok Airways — seasonal service.

International schedules vary by season. Low-cost carriers from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are a good option for travellers from Southeast Asia and Australia to reach Samui without connecting in Bangkok.

Arriving at Koh Samui Airport

The airport is compact — one runway, two terminals (domestic and international). Immigration queues on international arrivals are typically short: 5–20 minutes. Baggage arrives quickly.

After collecting luggage, you exit into the arrivals area where hotel and transfer representatives hold name signs, car rental desks are open, and taxis queue nearby. A few cafés and a small shop operate in the arrivals zone.

Transfers from the Airport to Your Villa or Hotel

Official Airport Taxi

Licensed airport taxis queue directly outside the arrivals exit. Fares are fixed by island zone:

  • Bophut, Mae Nam (north coast): ฿250–350 — the nearest districts to the airport.
  • Chaweng (east coast): ฿350–500.
  • Lamai: ฿500–700.
  • Chaweng Noi, Coral Cove: ฿500–600.
  • Nathon (west), Lipa Noi (southwest): ฿600–900.

These are approximate figures — confirm at the taxi counter. Cash payment on arrival. Fares are regulated so haggling is not customary.

Hotel or Villa Transfer

Many hotels and villa management companies arrange airport transfers when booked in advance. This is usually the same price or cheaper than an airport taxi. Ask when booking accommodation — transfers are often included in the package or priced nominally.

Grab (Ride-Hailing App)

Grab — Thailand's main ride-hailing service — operates on Koh Samui. With mobile internet (roaming or a Thai SIM card), you can book a ride through the app. Prices are typically 10–20% lower than the official airport taxi. Note: Grab drivers are formally restricted from picking up passengers directly at the terminal — you may need to walk a short distance from the exit or coordinate with your driver.

Car Rental at the Airport

Several local rental companies have desks in the arrivals area. If you're planning to drive throughout your stay, picking up a car on arrival is convenient. Rates are comparable to rental shops around the island: from ฿800/day for a small car.

Hotel Minivan / Shuttle

During peak season, some large hotels run shared shuttles from the airport. Cheaper than a private taxi but involves waiting for other passengers and multiple drop-off stops. Check with your hotel when booking.

Departing: Getting to the Airport

For the return journey, order a Grab through the app or arrange a transfer through your hotel or villa. Costs mirror arrival: taxi from Chaweng ฿400–500, from Lamai ฿600–700.

Timing advice: Bangkok Airways recommends arriving 1.5 hours before departure on domestic flights. The airport is small and check-in is fast, but during peak season (December–February) check-in queues can lengthen — allow extra time.

Airport Tax

The airport departure tax at Koh Samui is included in the price of your airline ticket — there is nothing additional to pay at the airport, either on arrival or departure.

Transfer Options at a Glance

  • Nearby areas (Bophut, Mae Nam): Grab or airport taxi — minimal difference, ฿250–350.
  • Chaweng: airport taxi ฿400–500 vs Grab ~฿350–450.
  • Lamai and further south: villa transfer is the best value if available.
  • Travelling with children and heavy luggage: hotel minivan or official airport taxi is more reliable than waiting for a Grab with a child seat.

Koh Samui Airport is the simplest way to reach the island from Bangkok. One hour by air versus 10–12 hours by the bus-and-ferry combination. If the Bangkok Airways fare fits your budget, it's the obvious choice for most travellers.
