Samui Beaches Guide 2026: Best for Swimming, Relaxed Living & First Visits
Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut, Maenam, Choeng Mon — which Samui beach to choose? Honest comparison: water, sand, infrastructure, season. No ads.
Koh Samui has more than twenty beaches. They are not all equal — water quality, infrastructure, and the general feel vary considerably. This guide covers eight beaches worth knowing, with an honest picture of what each one actually delivers.
Chaweng Beach — the island's main beach
Length: ~6 km. Orientation: east (good sunrises, no sunsets).
Fine white sand, a fully developed beachfront strip running from budget sun loungers to five-star hotel beach clubs. Water is good for swimming across the full length during the dry season (November–April). In the wet season (June–October) there can be mild currents at the southern end.
Strengths: everything within reach — restaurants, ATMs, pharmacies, shopping. The most accessible option if you want to rent accommodation right on the beach. A solid choice for a first visit when you want the full Samui package.
Weaknesses: the noisiest beach on the island. Soi Green Mango is audible at night. Jet-ski scams are well-documented — film the equipment's condition before boarding. High tourist density.
Best for: first-time visitors, young travellers, anyone who needs maximum infrastructure at hand.

Chaweng Noi — the quieter neighbour
A small peninsula just south of Chaweng. Narrower, calmer shoreline with boutique and luxury properties and much less commercial noise. A good compromise for anyone who wants to be in the Chaweng area without the club scene. Water quality is the same as Chaweng — eastern coast.
Lamai Beach — the second-largest
Length: ~4 km. Orientation: south-east.
Lamai is often described as "Chaweng without the clubs", but that's only partly accurate. It has its own independent character: a strong local Thai business presence, good restaurants, boxing rings, and a surfing culture when conditions allow. The beach is slightly narrower than Chaweng but has a good gradual entry into the water.
Notable features. The southern end — Hin Ta / Hin Yai (Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks) — is a free-entry photo spot. Water conditions in the rainy season are generally calmer here than at Chaweng.
Best for: independent travellers, active holidaymakers, couples and families with older children.

Bophut Beach — for those who live on Samui
Length: ~3 km. Orientation: north.
The northern coast has a different character: calmer, shallower nearshore, no eastern swell. Bophut Beach means gentle ripples, sea sunsets (rare on Samui), and fishing boats moored offshore. The Fisherman's Village — with cafés, galleries, and a Friday street market — is immediately adjacent.
For pure swimming tourism, this beach is weaker than Chaweng or Lamai. But for long-term living it is one of the most convenient areas: quiet, a well-established expat community, schools within reach.
Seasonal advantage. The northern coast is less exposed to the November–December storms that hit the eastern shoreline. When Chaweng temporarily closes for swimming, Bophut often remains calm.
Best for: families, expats, long-term rental, quiet relaxation.

Maenam Beach — the longest and most peaceful
Length: ~6 km. Orientation: north.
Maenam is the longest beach on the northern coast and the least commercial. Wide sand, low development density, calm water. Unlike Chaweng, you can walk for twenty minutes and not pass a single restaurant with touts.
Popular with kitesurfers in favourable conditions (particularly January–March). For families with young children — good water: shallow nearshore, no strong swell.
Main drawback: furthest from the airport and tourist infrastructure. A scooter or car is needed for comfortable daily life.
Best for: families with young children, those who value quiet, kitesurfing and surfing, long-term rental at moderate prices.
Choeng Mon Beach — compact and sheltered
Length: ~1 km. Orientation: north-east.
A small protected bay in the island's north-east corner. Shallow bottom, calm water — one of the best beaches for families with young children. Several good hotels and villas directly on the beach, a small evening food market nearby.
Close to the airport (10–15 minutes). Lower market competition means rental prices are below Chaweng levels for comparable proximity to the sea.
Best for: families with young children, quiet holidays away from nightlife.
Silver Beach / Crystal Bay — the most photogenic
A small beach between headlands on the eastern coast, south of Lamai. Turquoise water, rocky promontories, minimal infrastructure — the kind of image that appears in every "perfect Samui" photo set. Accessible only via a path on foot or by swimming around from neighbouring beaches. Ideal for a day trip, not for long-term life nearby.
Bang Rak / Big Buddha Beach — the practical option
A modest beach adjacent to the Big Buddha statue. Calm water, a working beach rather than a polished resort: ferries to Koh Phangan dock here. A solid base for living — five minutes from the airport, close to Bophut, with good transport links.
When is the best time to be on the beach?
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| December–April | High season. Both coasts are good. Eastern coast (Chaweng, Lamai) at its best. |
| May–July | Shoulder season. Warm water, fewer crowds. Short rain showers are manageable. |
| August–October | South-west monsoon. Swells on the western coast (Lipa Noi, Taling Ngam). |
| November | Peak rain on the eastern coast. Chaweng may close for swimming. Bophut and Maenam are good alternatives. |
