Koh Samui has become a popular base for remote workers and digital nomads. Good climate for most of the year, LTR and DTV visa options, and improving infrastructure attract people who need cafés with Wi-Fi, power sockets, and space to sit for several hours. The supply exists — you just need to know what to look for.

What to Check When Choosing a Work Café

  • Wi-Fi speed — aim for at least 20–30 Mbps for comfortable video calls. Check it immediately on arrival — speed varies by time of day and how many people are connected.
  • Power sockets — Thai cafés sometimes have few outlets. Ask or scout before settling in.
  • Air conditioning — working without AC in hot season is uncomfortable. Open-air terraces are pleasant in the morning but can be too hot by midday.
  • Minimum spend — many cafés expect an order every 1–2 hours. Coffee plus a meal is the norm; don't occupy a table all day on one drink.
  • Noise level — venues with loud music or inside a shopping mall can be difficult for calls. Look for a quiet section.

Where to Find Work-Friendly Cafés

Chaweng

Chaweng has the most cafés, including independent coffee shops and international chains, several of which are clearly set up for laptop work — power sockets at every table and no pressure to leave. Look for visible "Free Wi-Fi" signs, order something first, and test the connection before unpacking.

Bophut

Fisherman's Village has a handful of charming cafés with bay views. The atmosphere is quiet and pleasant — well-suited to morning work sessions with a laptop.

Mae Nam

Mae Nam has some café-style spaces that lean toward coworking — long work tables and reliable internet. The neighbourhood is quieter and less touristy than Chaweng, making it easier to focus.

Coworking Spaces

Dedicated coworking spaces have appeared on the island, primarily in Chaweng and Bophut. They offer fixed desks, meeting rooms, fast internet, and day or monthly rates. If you plan to work for more than two weeks, a coworking space may be more practical than a café.

Best Time to Work in a Café

Morning hours (8:00–12:00) are ideal: venues are quiet, Wi-Fi is faster, and coffee is fresh. Afternoons bring more people and slower connections. In peak season (December–February) arrive early — popular spots fill up quickly.
