Koh Samui is the perfect place for a sunset cocktail. A warm evening, the sound of waves, tropical ingredients in the glass, and the sky shifting from orange to violet — this is the evening you will remember for a long time. Here's where to find it.

Chaweng Beach Bars

Chaweng is Samui's main nightlife hub, and its beach bars are a genre of their own. Bamboo and wooden bars line the shore directly on the sand: tables at the water's edge, sunbeds, live music, and DJs from midnight onward. Most open early evening and close at 2–3 AM.

A popular format is fire shows — nightly performances at many beach bars. Jugglers with flaming torches, fire jumps, and skipping shows are all part of local beach entertainment, usually starting around 21:00.

Sunset Bars of Lamai and the West Coast

The west and southwest coast of Samui is the best place for sunsets. Taling Ngam, Lipa Noi, and Nathon beaches all face west, and here sunset over the sea is a daily natural spectacle. Small bars and restaurants along these beaches fill up by 17:30–18:00 as people arrive specifically for the sunset.

Lamai has a special atmosphere in the evening: at the Hin Ta Hin Yai rocks and in sea-view restaurants, couples and groups gather to watch the sunset with a cocktail — it has become a genuine ritual. Mojito, Aperol Spritz, Thai Basil Smash, or simply white wine — all perfectly appropriate.

Rooftop Bars

Rooftop culture on Samui is more modest than in Bangkok, but there are a few good spots. High-rises are rare here (building height restrictions apply), so rooftops typically mean a 3rd or 4th floor with panoramic sea or mountain views. The best views are toward Chaweng from the hills in the island's center, and from the hill above Bophut overlooking Samui Bay and distant Koh Phangan.

Craft Bars and Signature Cocktails

Over the past few years, bars with a more serious approach to cocktail menus have appeared on Samui. In Bophut and Chaweng, bartenders create signature cocktails with Thai ingredients: pandan-infused spirits, tamarind syrups, cocktails featuring kaffir lime and lemongrass. This isn't mass-market tourist product — it's thoughtful bar craft.

Prices at craft bars are higher: a signature cocktail runs ฿250–400. But it's a completely different level of experience.

Thai Alcoholic Drinks

To understand the local bar scene, it helps to know Thai alcohol:

  • Sangsom — Thai rum made from cane sugar. The base spirit for cocktails and beach buckets. Available everywhere.
  • Mekhong — Thai whisky with a distinctive taste. Drunk with soda and ice.
  • Ruang Khao — cheap Thai rice whisky. Consumed by locals; not recommended for mixing.
  • Chang and Singha — the most popular Thai beers. Light, thirst-quenching in the heat.
  • Leo — another popular Thai beer, slightly more bitter.

Beach Buckets

The "bucket" is the signature symbol of Thai beach holidays. It's a small bucket of ice, alcohol (usually Sangsom or Ruang Khao), and an energy drink or soda. Cost: ฿150–250. Sold directly on the beach by roaming vendors. These are strong drinks — be careful in the heat.

Bar Closing Times on Samui

The official closing time for bars in tourist areas is 2:00 AM. In practice, some establishments stay open until dawn, while others close at midnight, depending on their location and local authority policies. Chaweng is the most "nocturnal" area. Bophut and Mae Nam are calmer and close earlier.
