Detox on Koh Samui: Programmes, Centres and What to Expect
Detox programmes on Koh Samui: juice cleanses, herbal and Ayurvedic programmes, medical detox. Prices, preparation tips, and how to choose the right format.
Detox programmes on Koh Samui come in several formats — from one-day juice packages to multi-week residential retreats with medical supervision. The tropical climate, access to fresh produce, and the presence of specialised centres make the island a practical location for this type of health programme.
Types of Detox Programmes
Juice Cleanses
The most accessible format. Replace regular food with cold-pressed juices, smoothies, and herbal drinks for 1 to 7 days. Several island centres and health cafés offer ready-made juice packages for self-directed cleanses or as part of a residential programme.
Prices: one-day cold-pressed juice sets — ฿600–1,500. Residential programme with supervision — from ฿3,000 per day.
Herbal Programmes
Some centres specialise in detox using Thai and Ayurvedic herbs — herbal capsules or teas, specific foods, elimination of certain food groups. Typically 7, 14, or 21 days. The goal is to support liver, intestinal, and lymphatic function.
These programmes are often combined with yoga, Thai massage, and meditation — a common format for those seeking comprehensive recovery.
Ayurvedic Detox (Panchakarma)
Less common on Samui than in Sri Lanka or India, but a few centres offer adapted Ayurvedic programmes. Classical Panchakarma includes oil massage, steam treatments, therapeutic diet, and herbal medicine. Minimum duration: 7–10 days. Short "Ayurvedic" packages of 2–3 treatments are not Panchakarma in the strict sense.
Medical Detox
Detox under medical supervision — blood work before and after, physician oversight, individual nutrition and supplement protocols. Available at Bangkok Hospital Samui and several private wellness clinics. Higher cost than budget programmes, but a fundamentally different level of monitoring.
Who It's For
- Visitors who came specifically for health and wellness travel
- Long-term island residents using detox as a seasonal reset
- People recovering from a period of stress or poor diet
- Those using a cleanse as a trigger for dietary change (not the most effective long-term strategy, but widely practised)
What to Expect
- 3–5 days before starting: gradually reduce coffee, alcohol, red meat, and processed foods. An abrupt transition can produce stronger detox reactions.
- First 1–2 days may involve headaches, fatigue, and irritability — especially if you're quitting caffeine. This is normal.
- Exercise: avoid intense training during strict detox. Gentle walks, light yoga, and swimming are appropriate.
- Heat: tropical climate requires extra attention to hydration during detox. Water, coconut water, and herbal teas are essential.
- Exiting the programme matters as much as entering. An abrupt return to normal eating offsets the effect. Follow your centre's exit protocol.
Independent Detox
Residential programmes are not required. On the island you can find:
- Health cafés and restaurants with detox menus, juices, and clean-food options (concentrated in Chaweng and Bophut)
- Juice delivery sets to your villa
- Online programmes with remote nutritionist support
Self-directed detox works with structure and discipline. Without a clear plan, it loses purpose.
