Education on Koh Samui: International Schools, Tutoring and Starting from Scratch
Overview of schools and educational options for expat children on Koh Samui: Panyadee BIS, Samui International School, Thai government schools, and online learning.
Education is one of the primary concerns when moving abroad with children. On Samui, the situation is significantly better than on most other Thai resort islands: there are several international schools with serious academic programmes. But there are also specifics worth knowing in advance.
Panyadee British International School
Located in the Choeng Mon area, this is the island's top international school by academic standards. It follows the British curriculum: Key Stage 1–4 and IGCSE. Teaching is in English, classes are small (up to 20 students), and preparation for entry to British and Australian universities is strong.
- Approximate fees: 35,000–60,000 THB per month (depending on year group)
- Admissions: accept new students at any time of year; there is an assessment process
- Language of instruction: English, second language is Thai
- For seasonal families: short-term enrolment possible from one term
Samui International School
Located in Bophut, closer to the western part of the north shore. Offers an IB (International Baccalaureate) programme with pre-school groups and upper school. Less academic pressure than Panyadee, and a more flexible approach.
- Fees: 25,000–45,000 THB per month
- Suitable for: children who need a gentler adjustment environment or a more academically flexible path
Thai State and Private Schools
Thai government schools are free for children legally residing in Thailand. However, instruction is almost entirely in Thai — without language skills, a child's integration will take 6–12 months. For short-term stays this option is practically unworkable. For long-term residence of two years or more, it is entirely viable.
Online Education and Home Schooling
Many families staying for 2–4 months opt for distance learning:
- International online platforms: Khan Academy, IXL, Coursera Kids — supplementary materials in maths and sciences in English
- Private tutors: qualified tutors in maths, English and other subjects are available on the island. Cost: 500–1,500 THB per hour
Language Centres for Children and Adults
Language schools for Thai and English operate in Chaweng and Bophut. Several organisations offer group classes for children during seasonal sessions. Thai for children is a great bonus to any education: after around six weeks of immersion, many children start understanding basic phrases.
Practical Tips for Parents
If you are planning to bring a child for two months or more, here is what to do before you leave:
- Contact the school of your choice and confirm availability 2–3 months in advance
- Request an academic reference letter and permission for temporary overseas schooling from your home school
- Ensure the child's insurance covers medical expenses in Thailand
- Choose accommodation with the school's location in mind (Panyadee is in Choeng Mon — from Chaweng it is a 20–25 minute drive)
