Fishing is a popular activity around Koh Samui. The island sits in the fish-rich waters of the Gulf of Thailand, and experienced local guides offer everything from quick inshore trips to full-day offshore expeditions.

Types of Fishing Available

Deep-Sea Fishing

The most popular format for visitors. Boats travel 20-40 km offshore to target large species: yellowfin and skipjack tuna, marlin, sailfish, wahoo and mahi-mahi. Tour duration: 6-10 hours. Tackle and bait provided. Cost: 3,500-7,000 THB per person in a group, or 15,000-25,000 THB for a private charter.

Inshore Fishing

Shorter 3-4 hour trips in coastal waters targeting barracuda, grouper, mullet and various snappers. Suitable for those who prefer calmer conditions or are prone to seasickness. Cost: 1,500-2,500 THB per person.

Night Fishing (Squid Jigging)

Depart after sunset, return before dawn. The boat's lights attract squid from the surrounding water. Red snapper also bites well at night. Duration: 4-6 hours. Cost: 1,500-2,000 THB per person.

Shore Fishing

Independent fishing from piers, beaches and rocks. Good spots include the piers at Na Thon and the fishing village areas of Bophut and Maenam. Basic tackle sets available in local shops for 200-400 THB.

What Catches and When

March-June: peak deep-sea season — tuna, marlin, mahi-mahi. July-September: consistent offshore fishing, calm weather. October-November: good inshore action — snapper, barracuda; east coast can be rough. December-February: monsoon limits offshore trips; night squid fishing remains productive.

Booking and Operators

Most fishing operators work out of Na Thon port and Bophut bay. Book through hotel concierge desks, pier-side offices or activity agencies in Chaweng. Confirm: boat type, whether tackle and bait are included, catch policy, and whether the boat has shade and a toilet.

Catch Policy

Most marlin and sailfish trips are catch-and-release — both species are subject to conservation programmes. Tuna, barracuda and smaller fish can usually be kept. Some beachside restaurants will cook your catch; ask the captain for recommendations.

Practical Tips for Beginners

Take sea-sickness medication (Dramamine or hyoscine) for any deep-sea trip. Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen and bring a cap. Pack a light jacket — wind on open water can feel cool even on a hot day. Early departures (06:00-07:00) are preferable for offshore fishing — morning feeding activity is strongest.

Licensing Rules

Tourists fishing from a licensed charter vessel require no personal licence — the licence covers the boat. Rod fishing from public shores requires no permit. Nets and traps need a separate licence. Sea turtles and certain shark species are protected — catching them carries significant fines. Fishing within Ang Thong Marine National Park is prohibited.

Freshwater fishing ponds near Na Thon town offer 200–500 THB hourly sessions targeting tilapia and carp — rods provided, suitable for children and first-timers.

Preventing Seasickness

Take Dramamine or equivalent 30–60 minutes before departure for any offshore trip. Sit near the stern or midship on deck, watch the horizon, and avoid reading. Ginger sweets and cold cola help with mild nausea.
