But that extra step works as a natural filter: everyone who arrives on Samui chose it deliberately. For villa renters, understanding the logistics upfront means your trip starts on the right note — not with unexpected layovers or unnecessary hours stuck on the road.

Step 1. Flying to Bangkok or Surat Thani

Most international flights arrive in Bangkok — either Suvarnabhumi (BKK) for full-service airlines, or Don Mueang (DMK) for budget carriers such as AirAsia. If you're flying from Moscow, Dubai, or other major hubs, Suvarnabhumi is the likely entry point.

An alternative is flying into Surat Thani airport (URT) on the mainland — closer to the ferry, fewer connections, mainly useful for those connecting from Phuket or regional Thai cities.

Step 2. Bangkok to Koh Samui

Fastest: direct flight

Bangkok Airways operates direct flights from Suvarnabhumi to Koh Samui Airport (USM) — effectively a monopoly on this route. Flight time is about 1 hour, with multiple daily departures. Samui Airport is one of the most scenic in Asia: open pavilions among palm trees, the holiday mood begins on landing.

Direct flights BKK–USM can be expensive, especially booked last minute. Book 4–6 weeks ahead or watch for Bangkok Airways promotions.

Budget option: fly to Surat Thani + ferry

Budget airlines serve Surat Thani (URT) from Don Mueang. From there, a bus or taxi to the ferry pier takes around 1 hour, followed by a ~1.5 hour ferry crossing to Samui. Total travel time from boarding the plane to arriving on the island: 4–6 hours. Savings on the flight leg can be substantial, especially for longer villa stays.

Classic: overnight train or bus + ferry

An overnight train from Bangkok to Surat Thani (9–11 hours in a sleeper car) followed by the ferry is a budget and atmospheric option — Thai trains are comfortable, especially in second-class sleepers. Good for travellers with flexible schedules who want to see the country en route.

Ferries to Koh Samui

Ferries depart from Donsak pier in Surat Thani province. Main operators are Seatran and Raja Ferry — large car ferries that also carry buses, trucks and private vehicles. Crossing time: approximately 1.5 hours. Lomprayah high-speed catamarans arrive at Maenam Beach on the island's north shore — convenient if your villa is in Maenam or Bophut.

Step 3. Transfer from Airport or Pier to Your Villa

Samui Airport is small and transfers are easy to arrange right at the exit. Main options:

  • Pre-arranged transfer through your villa management — the most comfortable option. A driver meets you with a nameplate and helps with luggage. Confirm in advance whether this is included in your rental.
  • Airport taxi — available immediately outside the baggage claim area. Prices are set by zone; agree on the fare before getting in.
  • Car rental — if you plan to explore the island independently, renting at the airport is straightforward. Note: Samui drives on the left.

From the airport: Chaweng takes 15–20 minutes, Maenam 20–25 minutes, Lipa Noi on the west coast 40–50 minutes.

  • Get the villa's GPS coordinates — street addresses on Samui are unreliable; local drivers navigate by Google Maps.
  • Check-in from 2 pm — most villas receive guests from 14:00. If you arrive in the morning, arrange early check-in in advance.
  • Carry cash — ATMs exist at the pier and airport, but having Thai baht from the first moment saves friction with taxis.
  • SIM card — buy at Bangkok Airport or at Samui Airport on arrival. Local operators (AIS, DTAC, True) give solid island-wide coverage.
