Koh Samui is an island where a sunset over the Gulf of Thailand transforms an ordinary dinner into something memorable. Sea view restaurants here range from buzzy rooftop bars above Chaweng hotels to quiet tables set directly on the sand in Lamai.

Chaweng Rooftop Bars

The northern part of Chaweng concentrates rooftop venues with panoramic views of the bay. These fourth- and fifth-floor spots offer cocktail menus, tapas-style snacks and lounge music. The prime time is 30–40 minutes before sunset, when tables along the railing disappear fast. In high season (December–February) it is worth booking a table in advance.

Waterfront Dining

Lamai and Bang Rak have restaurants where tables are literally a metre from the surf. Not rooftop views, but the sea is just as present: waves, boats on the horizon and salt air. The menu here tends to be Thai-seafood — tiger prawns, grilled fish, shellfish in coconut sauce. Prices run a little higher than street stalls but are not extreme: average bill for two with drinks is around 700–1,500 baht.

Maenam Beach Restaurants

Maenam is one of Samui's quietest areas, and its restaurants reflect that character. Wooden decks over the sand, string lights, the whisper of waves. The cuisine leans Thai with a seafood focus, though European menus appear too. This is the place for long unhurried dinners, perhaps with live guitar or soft jazz in the background.

Bophut: Fisherman's Village in the Evening

The Bophut waterfront is in a category of its own. Restaurants line old wooden shophouses in Chinese-colonial style, with a narrow channel and fishing boats in front. The view is understated but the atmosphere is exceptional. Fusion kitchens — Thai flavours in European presentation — work well here. On Fridays the night market brings extra life; combine a stroll with dinner at one of the waterfront spots.

Practical Tips

The best sea view tables fill up 30–60 minutes before sunset. In December–January reservations are almost essential. Dress code is casual at most places, though five-star hotel rooftops may ask guests to avoid beach attire. Sunset cocktails are typically priced 20–30% above normal, but the view is included.
