Sunset is one of Koh Samui's headline attractions. The sun sets over the Gulf of Thailand, which means the best views are on the western shore. Here is where locals and visitors go to watch the sunset with a cocktail.

Western Coast: Taling Ngam and Lipa Noi

Taling Ngam and Lipa Noi are the two western-shore areas of Samui with an unobstructed horizon. Several restaurants and bars here have decks directly above the water. The sunset is a long performance: the open horizon gives the sky time to cycle through orange to crimson. Venues open around 4 pm; peak time is 5:30–6:30 pm depending on the season.

Rooftop Bars

On the eastern shore, where Chaweng is located, the sun sets behind the hills rather than into the sea — a softer, more pastel show with palm silhouettes. Rooftop bars here catch the last light above the bay if they are tall enough. Bars on the fifth floor and above have an advantage: from that height you see the sea horizon as well as the beach below.

Maenam Beach: Quiet Sunsets

Maenam is one of the few north-shore beaches with a reasonable sunset sightline. There are no large restaurant clusters here, but a handful of quiet cafes and venues facing the sea cater to long-stay residents of the area. The atmosphere is introverted and calm — the complete opposite of Chaweng.

Boat Sunsets and Sea Cruises

A category of its own: sunsets from the water. A charter boat or catamaran for two to three hours, departing one hour before sunset. The view of the island from the sea in golden hour light is a completely different experience. Group charter: from 3,000 baht; shared sunset tour: from 1,200 baht per person.

Practical Tips

Sunset time by season: November–February around 6–6:30 pm; April–August 7–7:30 pm. Do not arrive more than 20 minutes late — the best light lasts only 15–25 minutes. Cocktails at sunset bars: 200–400 baht. Book a table on the western shore in high season.
