Sunsets over the Gulf of Thailand are one of Koh Samui's signature experiences. Sailing yacht (monohull) — the classic romantic option. Small group (8–16 guests), unhurried sailing, cocktails on the bow. Preferred by couples and small groups of friends.

Catamaran — spacious deck, more seating, steadier in a swell. Popular for groups and corporate outings. Guests can move freely around the whole vessel.

Longtail boat — a more authentic Thai experience. Fewer passengers (4–6), closer to the water, different atmosphere. Lower cost, more basic comfort.

Party catamaran — large vessel (30–50+ guests) with a bar, music and dancing on board. A different format — more celebration than romance, geared toward social groups.

Departure Points and Routes

Most sunset cruises depart from Nathon Pier, or from jetties in Mae Nam, Bo Phut or Bang Rak. Routes run along Samui's western or north-western shoreline, heading towards open water in good weather. For a proper sunset view the boat must head west — the eastern shore (Chaweng, Lamai) is the wrong direction, as the sun sets behind the island.

  • Check the weather forecast the day before — during the north-east monsoon (November–March) the western shore is typically calm; the eastern shore is not.
  • Ask about the rescheduling / cancellation policy in bad weather — most reputable operators reschedule without a penalty fee.
  • If the sunset view matters, confirm the boat heads west or north-west, not along the eastern shore.
  • Bring a light layer — on the water it is cooler than on the beach at dusk.
