Koh Samui is not a classic surf destination — there are no large ocean swells here. But for water sports enthusiasts, the island offers enough: beginner-friendly surf breaks, wakeboarding, kitesurfing, jet skis, and stand-up paddleboarding are all available at several spots around the island.

Surfing: Where and When

The best surfing conditions on Samui come between October and December, when the northeast monsoon generates waves along the east coast. Key surfing beaches:

  • Chaweng Beach — the island's longest beach. During the season, board rentals and beginner lessons are available here. Waves are modest — 1–1.5 meters — ideal for learning. Several surf schools operate with English- and Russian-speaking instructors.
  • Chaweng Noi — the quieter neighbor to the main beach. Similar waves, fewer people. A good choice for those who prefer learning without a crowd.
  • Ban Tai and Lamai — the east coast south of Chaweng. Surfable waves also appear in November–December; board rentals are available.

Outside the season (February–September) there are no waves for surfing on Samui. During this time, surfers typically head to Koh Samet or Koh Chang.

Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing on Samui is centered on the north coast — around Maenam and Bophut. From December through February, the northeast trade wind brings steady 15–25 knot conditions. Several schools offer lessons from scratch and equipment rental. Earning a basic IKO certification typically takes 8–12 hours of instruction.

Wakeboarding and Water Skiing

Samui has no cable wake park, but many beachfront water sports centers offer wakeboarding and water skiing behind a boat. Rentals are most commonly available in Chaweng and Bophut. A session typically lasts 15–20 minutes; prices range from 500 to 1,500 baht depending on the operator and season.

Jet Skis

Jet skiing is one of the most widespread water activities on Samui's beaches. Rentals are available at virtually every major beach. Important: before renting, inspect the jet ski and document any existing damage — this is standard practice to avoid disputes on return.

Paddleboarding and Canoes

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is a calm alternative for those who want time on the water without speed. It's especially popular in Bophut and Choeng Mon bay, where the water is calmer. Board rental runs 200–400 baht per hour and suits all fitness levels.

Parasailing

Parasailing — flying behind a boat under a parachute — is available at Chaweng and Lamai beaches in calm weather. It's leisure rather than sport, but the aerial view of Samui is impressive even for those who've visited many times.
