Getting from a villa to the beach, visiting a restaurant in Chaweng, or returning from a night market — Koh Samui has three main transport options for tourists and long-stay renters: songthaew, Grab, and tourist taxi. Each has its own logic, price range, and best use case.
Songthaew: Public Transport Along Route 4169
A songthaew is a pickup truck with a covered body and two rows of benches along the sides (hence the name: "song" = two, "thaew" = row). Locals and tourists often call it "tuk-tuk", though it has nothing to do with the classic three-wheeled Thai tuk-tuk. Externally it's a solid pickup with a canopy that seats 10–12 people.
Three main routes on the island:
- Nathon → Maenam → Bang Por → Big Buddha → Chaweng (north ring along Route 4169)
- Nathon → Lamai (south route)
- Nathon → Big Buddha → Chaweng (central route)
All routes run along the ring road Route 4169. Songthaews don't travel into the interior of the island — to waterfalls, mountain villages, or inland areas — only along the coastal ring road.
Operating modes — day and evening:
- Until 17:00–18:00: fixed-price route service. Stand by the road in the direction of the route you need, raise your hand — the songthaew will stop. Board, pay when you exit.
- After 18:00: switches to private on-demand mode. Agree on the price before the trip — typically ฿100 per person for any destination. Groups of 3–4 should compare this with Grab — often the cost is similar.

How to board and exit:
- Board: stand by the road in the direction of the route, raise your hand.
- Exit: press the electric bell button under the roof in the middle of the truck body.
- Payment: hand the money when exiting, ideally exact change.
Tip: Drivers sometimes quote inflated prices to foreigners. Clarify the price before boarding, hand the correct amount when you exit — calmly and without confrontation. If the driver insists on a "farang rate", pay and move on. In a serious dispute, note the plate number and photograph the driver's transport licence (fixed to the rear window): this typically resolves any issue immediately.
Tourist Taxi
Private taxis on Samui are typically sedans and minivans stationed at hotels, markets, shopping centres, and the airport. Prices here are negotiated and significantly higher than songthaew or Grab.
Approximate prices:
- Anywhere on the island: ฿300–500
- Chaweng to Lamai over the mountain pass: ฿500–700
- Airport → Chaweng: ฿500–800
- Airport → Lamai or Nathon: ฿700–1,000
When to choose a tourist taxi: Grab is unavailable or you don't have the app; you need a minivan for a large group with luggage; early or late flight when songthaews aren't running.
Grab — Ride-Hailing App
Grab is the main ride-hailing app in Thailand. It works on Koh Samui, though driver availability is considerably lower than in Bangkok or Phuket.
How to use: download the Grab app (iOS / Android), link a card or choose cash payment, set pick-up and drop-off points — the app shows a fixed price.
Approximate 2025–2026 prices:
- Within Chaweng: ฿100–180
- Chaweng → Maenam: ฿250–380
- Chaweng → Airport (Big Buddha area): ฿180–280
- Wait time: 5–15 minutes
Grab costs more than songthaew but less than a tourist taxi. Key advantage: fixed price with no haggling. Drawback — during peak hours (Friday evening, December–January) available cars can be scarce.
Motorbike Taxi
Quick and cheap — ฿30–100 for short hops. Find them at major intersections, markets, and shopping centre entrances. Drivers wear numbered vests. Not recommended on your first day on the island, with heavy luggage, or in heavy rain.
