Why Understanding Seasons Matters Before Booking a Villa

Koh Samui's climate is fundamentally different from Phuket or Bangkok. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, the island's rainy season is shifted: while the western coast of Thailand gets drenched from May to October, Samui still enjoys sunshine. But when the rest of Thailand is dry and hot, Samui can face the northeast monsoon.

For villa renters, this matters. A private pool is no fun during three days of storms. Here's your practical guide to when to go, when to save, and when to plan around the weather.

High Season: December — March

The best weather on Koh Samui runs from December through March. Stable conditions: air temperature 29–30°C, calm clear sea, minimal rain. January and February see just 5–6 rainy days per month and 58–78mm of precipitation — the driest months of the year.

This is also when villa prices peak. December, especially Christmas and New Year, can push rates 1.5–2x above the base. Villas on the northern coast (Maenam, Bophut) and in Chaweng book out 2–3 months ahead during this period.

Tip: for high-season weather at a reasonable price, target late February or March. The weather is excellent and the holiday premium has faded.

Shoulder Season: April — June

April and May are transitional. Temperature climbs to 32–33°C, rain days increase (around 14 in May), but showers are typically brief — a tropical downpour for 30 minutes, then back to sun. The sea stays calm on most beaches.

April brings Songkran (Thai New Year): streets turn into a water-fight carnival. For villa renters with a private pool, it's a perfect excuse to stay home and let the chaos pass.

June is technically low season, though Samui's low season is milder than elsewhere in Thailand. Villa prices drop 20–40%, and tourist numbers fall noticeably.

Low Season: July — November

The cheapest window for villa rental is July–November. July, August and September are workable: there's rain, but often as short evening storms rather than all-day downpours. Some beaches get waves on southern and eastern shores, but villas run 30–50% cheaper.

October and November are Samui's peak monsoon. November is the wettest month on the island (~490mm, nearly 20 rain days). Some beaches accumulate debris and the sea gets rough. Villas with enclosed gardens and covered or private pools become especially valuable — your own sanctuary regardless of what happens outside.

Tip: if you're booking in October–November, look at more sheltered locations: Choeng Mon, Big Buddha, Maenam. These areas handle the northeast monsoon better than the east coast.
