Koh Samui has moved well beyond its beach resort origins. Every year thousands of travellers come specifically for wellness practices — yoga, meditation, detox and mindfulness. The island offers a wide range of programmes: from single-session drop-ins for tourists to intensive week-long immersion retreats.

Retreat Formats on Koh Samui

Single-Session Drop-In Classes

For those who want to try without commitment. Most studios accept drop-in students: one hatha or vinyasa class — 400–600 baht. Sessions run 60–90 minutes.

Week-Long Residential Retreats

The most popular format for those who travel specifically for practice. Typically includes:

  • 2 yoga sessions daily (morning and evening)
  • Meals — usually vegetarian or vegan
  • Accommodation (from dormitories to private bungalows)
  • Meditation, pranayama, lectures

Prices for 7 days: from 12,000 baht (basic accommodation) to 35,000 baht (sea-view luxury).

Meditation Retreats (Vipassana, Zen)

A stricter format: often includes noble silence, early rising (4:30–5:00 am), multiple meditation sessions daily. On Samui itself, the best-known centre for this format is the Dipabhavan Meditation Centre (silent meditation retreats, noble silence); for classic Suan Mokkh-style vipassana, the nearest option is on the mainland — Wat Suan Mokkh (about 3 hours from Samui).

Detox Retreats with Yoga

A combination of fasting or juice detox with daily yoga. One of Samui's signature offerings. Programmes run 3–10 days; prices — 8,000–25,000 baht depending on the accommodation level and detox type.

Leading Retreat Centres

Absolute Sanctuary

One of the island's most well-known wellness centres, located in Choeng Mon. Specialises in detox, fitness and yoga. Medical staff on site. Retreat prices are above average (from 25,000 baht/week with accommodation).

The Yoga Retreat Koh Samui

A more accessible alternative. Daily classes with drop-in option. Hatha, vinyasa, yin yoga. Located closer to Chaweng. Class price: 450–500 baht.

Samui Yoga (Lamai)

A small studio in Lamai. Intimate atmosphere, small groups (up to 8). Weekly programmes by arrangement, accommodation available nearby. Good for those who want to combine practice with Lamai beach.

Tamarind Springs Forest Spa

An unusual format: a tropical spa retreat in the island's mountain area. Nature meditation, sound baths, yoga. Day visits from 700 baht; retreats by arrangement.

How to Choose a Programme

  1. Level: is the programme suitable for beginners? Many intensives assume 1+ year of experience.
  2. Style: hatha (slow, accessible), vinyasa (dynamic), yin (relaxation and stretching), kundalini (energy practices). Choose by goal.
  3. Meals: included or not, what type (vegetarian, vegan, raw food)?
  4. Group size: small groups (up to 8) mean more attention from the instructor.
  5. Reviews: check TripAdvisor and Retreat.guru — a specialist platform for retreats.

Best Season

Best time for a yoga retreat on Koh Samui: December–April (dry season, comfortable temperatures). During the rainy season (October–November) most centres operate, but some outdoor sessions move indoors. Low-season prices (May–October) are 15–25% lower.

What to Pack

  • A yoga mat (often provided, but check in advance)
  • Light practice clothing (cotton or bamboo over synthetic)
  • A refillable water bottle
  • A notebook (especially useful at meditation retreats)

Koh Samui is an excellent place for a first retreat experience. The warm climate, beautiful natural setting and wide programme offering make the island one of Southeast Asia's leading wellness destinations.
