Koh Samui has several places where you can encounter the wildlife of Southeast Asia. The island's zoo and aquarium are among the most popular family destinations. For children, it's not just a walk: there are shows, opportunities to photograph animals, and chances to learn about exotic species you won't find elsewhere.

Koh Samui Zoo: Animals and Shows

Samui Zoo houses tigers, crocodiles, snakes, tropical birds, and other animals. The zoo is located in the central part of the island, roughly halfway between Chaweng and Lamai. The territory is compact but packed: you can explore everything in two to three hours.

Main attractions:

  • Crocodile show — trainers work closely with large reptiles. Children are usually thrilled, though the spectacle isn't for the faint-hearted.
  • Monkey show — macaques perform tricks, pick coconuts, and solve simple puzzles. Duration is about 20–30 minutes.
  • Elephant show — some island zoos offer small performances with Asian elephants.
  • Animal feeding — many venues allow visitors to feed giraffes, deer, and small animals under staff supervision.

Photo sessions with tiger cubs or pythons are common practice. Ask about conditions on-site: some zoos offer this as a separate paid service.

Na Muang Safari Park

In the south of the island, near the Na Muang waterfalls, there's a safari park focused on ecology and active entertainment: jungle elephant treks, ATVs, zip-lines, and hiking trails. Older children especially love the zip-line over the forest canyon.

Elephant walks at the safari park take place on forest trails rather than in an arena — a more natural interaction with the animals. Duration is about 30–60 minutes depending on the route chosen.

Samui Aquarium

The aquarium is on the southern shore in the Ban Kao area. It's one of the larger aquariums in Thailand for such a region. Main exhibits include fish from the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea, sea turtles, sharks, rays, and jellyfish.

Many children particularly love the underwater tunnel — a transparent walkway through which you walk while fish swim all around and above you. Some aquariums offer fish feeding or diving in open tanks for older children.

Practical Tips

  • Arrive in the morning: fewer tourists in the first half of the day, animals more active.
  • Check show schedules: most shows run several times a day at fixed times. Plan your arrival accordingly.
  • Sun protection: most of the zoo grounds are outdoors. A hat, sunscreen, and light clothing are essential.
  • Comfortable footwear: you'll be walking on uneven paths for a long time.
  • Bring water: in the tropics, dehydration sets in quickly, especially for children.

Combining Zoo and Waterfalls

Na Muang Safari Park is located near the Na Muang waterfalls — one of the island's main natural attractions. Waterfall No. 1 is accessible to all; the path is easy. Waterfall No. 2 is higher and requires a forest trail hike — about 30–40 minutes each way.

Combining the zoo and waterfalls in one day is very feasible: the whole outing takes about 4–5 hours. Bring lunch or snacks — there are cafes on the grounds, but selection is limited.

Suitable Ages

The zoo and aquarium are well-suited for virtually any child's age. Toddlers under 3 — for the vivid impressions from animals. Children 4–10 — ideal: shows, feeding, endless questions. Teenagers — safari, zip-line, underwater tunnel. Adults won't be bored either: Thailand's tropical fauna is fascinating in its own right.
