Koh Samui may not be the first destination that comes to mind for surfing, but the island has its own waves, season and relaxed surf culture. Unlike Phuket or Bali, the waves here are gentler — making Samui an ideal spot for beginners or anyone wanting to try surfing in a low-pressure setting.

Best Surf Spots

Chaweng Beach is the main surfing location on Samui. The northern end of Chaweng generates soft, learner-friendly waves of 0.5–1.5 metres, and most of the island's surf schools are based here.

The north coast (Maenam, Bophut) occasionally produces waves during the season, but they are less consistent in form.

Surf Season

Samui's surf season runs from October to January, when the north-east monsoon brings swell to the island's eastern coast. The peak is November and December. Outside this window, surfable waves are rare.

Surf Schools

Surf schools on Chaweng cater to beginners. A standard lesson lasts 1.5–2 hours and includes a shore-based theory session followed by in-water practice with an instructor. Boards and rash guards are provided. No prior experience is needed.

Safety

Surf only in designated areas, away from swimming zones. In November–December, strong currents can occur — avoid the water during storms and always follow local instructor guidance. Beginners should always surf with supervision.

What to Bring

Waterproof sunscreen SPF 50+, a rash guard (tropical sun burns even through cloud), water and a microfibre towel. No glasses needed.
