Koh Samui is not a classic surf destination, but the northeast monsoon season (October–January) brings consistent swells to the island's east and northeast shores. Outside monsoon, SUP and kitesurfing are available almost year-round.

Surfing: Where & When

Chaweng Beach

Samui's longest beach picks up the most consistent waves in season. November–December typically brings 0.5–1.5 m waves — great for learning. On bigger swell days waves can reach 2 m+.

Chaweng Noi

A quieter cove just south of Chaweng. Comparable swell with fewer crowds — ideal for beginners who want more space.

Lamai Beach

The island's second-longest beach. Catches less swell than Chaweng but can produce good learning conditions on select days during the monsoon window.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)

SUP is available year-round in sheltered bays. The north shore — Mae Nam and Bophut — offers flat, calm water with scenic views across to Koh Phangan. Beach rentals typically charge 300–600 THB per hour.

Kitesurfing

The north and northeast coast receives reliable wind from November through February. Lipa Noi and Mae Nam are considered the island's best kite spots. Schools offer intro sessions and full IKO-certified courses.

Rentals & Lessons

Several surf schools on Chaweng and Lamai offer beginner lessons — usually 1.5–2 hour group sessions on longboards. Board rental starts from around 200 THB/hour; surf lessons from 500 THB per session.
