Trekking is one of the best activities for those who want to experience Koh Samui beyond its beaches and tourist infrastructure. Mountain trails, tropical forests, waterfalls and panoramic viewpoints await anyone willing to walk a few kilometres. The island is relatively small but surprisingly varied in terrain.

Main Trails

Na Muang Waterfall 2 trail — one of the island's most popular hikes. About 1.5 km each way along a forest path with some ascent. Moderately demanding due to the climb; rewarded with a scenic two-tier waterfall about 20 metres high. Best done in the morning.

Central mountain ridge (Route 4169) — several unmarked jungle trails begin from this road between Chaweng and Nathon. A local guide or GPS track is recommended. The ridge offers simultaneous views of both coastlines.

Hin Lad Trail near Nathon — about 2 km through forest to a small waterfall, ideal for an easy morning walk.

Difficulty Level

Most Samui trails are easy to moderate with no technical sections. Trekking shoes or sturdy sandals are sufficient. In the rainy season trails become slippery — take care.

Wildlife

Expect to encounter macaque monkeys (keep your distance, do not feed), colourful lizards, butterflies and varied birdlife. Snakes are present but rarely seen — watch where you step. If you encounter a wild boar, retreat calmly rather than running.

Best Time to Go

Early morning (6:00–10:00) is ideal before the heat builds. The dry season (November–April) offers the best trail conditions. Wet-season trekking (October–November) is possible but trails are slippery.

What to Bring

At least one litre of water per person, trekking shoes, insect repellent, a small first-aid kit, sunscreen and a phone with offline maps for navigation.
