How Many Bedrooms Do You Actually Need

Start with the real headcount and the mix of guests. Most Samui villas sleep between 4 and 12 guests across 2–6 bedrooms. For groups larger than eight, look specifically for properties with five to eight bedrooms — they do exist, particularly in the Chaweng Noi, Choeng Mon and hilltop areas.

One important detail: some listings advertise a maximum occupancy that includes sofa beds or roll-outs. Before booking, confirm how many of the stated beds are proper double or king beds rather than supplements. For a large group this can make a real difference to comfort.

Common Areas Matter More Than You Think

When you are travelling in a group, the kitchen and living space become the heart of the villa. Check whether there is enough crockery and cutlery for everyone, whether there is a large dining table rather than two small ones pushed together and whether the fridge is big enough for a full house. Some villas are kitted out for four to six guests and that becomes obvious when twelve people try to sit down for dinner.

A covered outdoor terrace or sala is essential for groups. Evening gatherings outside are one of the best parts of a Samui stay, and they work much better when there is enough room to sit comfortably.

The Pool: Size and Position

A private pool is standard for villas on Samui, but the dimensions vary widely. A 4×8 m pool will feel cramped for ten people. Look for properties with a pool of at least 6×12 m or an irregular shape that gives more swimming space overall.

Also consider the pool's position relative to the living area. Being able to see the pool from the terrace or sala matters if children are in the group. Infinity-edge pools look spectacular in photos but require extra vigilance.

Parking and Transport

A large group typically rents more than one car or books a minivan. Check upfront whether the villa has covered or open parking and how many vehicles fit. Getting around Samui without transport is difficult, so easy road access and enough parking spaces save a significant amount of hassle.

Location: Quiet Retreat or Close to Amenities

For group travel it is especially worth deciding upfront whether you want easy access to restaurants, shops and evening entertainment — or complete seclusion. A hillside villa above Nathon gives privacy but means a daily drive for groceries; a villa near Chaweng or Lamai lets you walk to dinner. There is no right answer, but the whole group needs to agree.

Staff and Services

Many Samui villas include daily housekeeping and sometimes a villa manager or private chef. For a large group, having staff is not a luxury — it is practical. Dishes get cleared, towels get changed and logistics are handled without anyone in the group having to play host. Check at the time of booking whether staff are included in the rental rate or charged separately.
