Beyond diving and snorkeling, Koh Samui's beaches offer a full menu of adrenaline-fuelled and family-friendly water activities: jet ski, parasailing, banana boat, wakeboarding, and stand-up paddleboarding. Most require no prior experience and are available directly on the beach.

Jet Ski

Jet ski rentals are concentrated on Chaweng and Lamai beaches. Standard rates are around 1,000–1,500 THB for 30 minutes. Before heading out, inspect the machine with the operator and photograph any existing scratches or damage to avoid disputes on return. Minimum age is 18; minors require a parent or guardian present.

Parasailing

Being towed skyward behind a speedboat gives a spectacular bird's-eye view of the bay — reefs, islands, and the coastline all visible at once. Flights last 10–15 minutes; weight limit is usually 100 kg. Prices range from 800 to 1,500 THB. Available at Chaweng, Lamai, and Maenam from March through October in calm wind conditions.

Beach Tow Rides

The banana boat fits 4–8 riders and is perfect for groups and families. Fly-fish and doughnut tubes offer a faster, bumpier ride for thrill-seekers. Wakeboarding and water-skiing are available at Chaweng and Bophut with instructor guidance. All rides typically cost 400–1,200 THB per session.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP)

A quieter alternative to motorized activities. SUP board rental runs 200–400 THB per hour; many beaches offer a free introductory lesson. Early morning (07:00–09:00) is ideal — flat water and fewer people. SUP yoga sessions are growing in popularity around Chong Mon and Maenam.

Tips

The morning hours before the sea breeze picks up are best for most water sports. November to January can limit operations on the east coast due to swell. Booking directly with beach operators tends to be cheaper than going through a hotel concierge.

Insurance & Safety

Most beach operators will ask you to sign a liability waiver — read it before signing. Check whether your travel insurance covers water sports: many standard policies exclude 'extreme activities.' Life jackets are mandatory for jet ski and all towed rides. Children under 18 should stick to calmer options (banana boat, SUP) with adults present. Never go on the water under the influence of alcohol — this voids insurance coverage and is an administrative offence under Thai law.

Where to Find Operators

The widest selection of water sports is at Chaweng, followed by Lamai and Maenam. Quieter beaches like Chong Mon and Silver Beach have fewer options but shorter queues. During high season (December–March) popular activities fill up quickly — arrive before 10:00 or book the day before through your accommodation.
