PADI Speciality: Enriched Air/Nitrox Diving

Very often, after finishing the entry-level course our graduates continue their training, improving their skills and acquiring specialities.

PADI is the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, founded in the USA. It counts thousands of schools around the world, including our partners' school on the island of Koh Samui. The work of schools and dive centres is supervised by the corresponding regional office. PADI certifications are uniform for all regions and are recognised by other federations and dive centres worldwide without any restrictions.

First, let us define the terms.

So what exactly is Nitrox?
As we already know, the main components of the air around us are nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrogen is called Nitrogen and denoted by the letter N; oxygen is Oxygen, denoted by O. The mixture of these gases was named Nitrox, as a blend of the words Nitrogen and Oxygen. Ordinary air contains 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen. In diving, Nitrox mixtures with an elevated oxygen content from 20% to 40% are used.

Why dive with Nitrox?
Increasing the percentage of oxygen in the breathing mixture and, correspondingly, reducing the nitrogen allows a diver to stay at depth substantially longer. In other words, the less nitrogen in the mixture, the less the body's tissues become saturated with it and the lower the risk of decompression sickness. Using a Nitrox mixture with an elevated oxygen content also reduces the danger of nitrogen narcosis (nitrogen intoxication).

Enriched Air/Nitrox PADI is one of the most popular PADI speciality courses. Diving with nitrox will let you maximise your bottom time and shorten the surface interval without violating the limits of safety. This capability is useful for those who plan to do underwater photo or video shooting, dive on sunken objects, or simply want to extend the pleasure of their dives.
On the course you will gain additional knowledge of diving theory and practise new dive skills. The Enriched Air/Nitrox certificate will allow you to keep using enriched air for diving at dive centres all over the world.

The course duration is 1-2 days.
The minimum age for this programme is 15 years.
To enrol in the course you must be a certified diver of at least Open Water Diver or Junior Open Water Diver level.
