For those who want to stay in shape while visiting or living long-term on Koh Samui, the island's fitness infrastructure has expanded considerably over the past decade. From small local gyms to CrossFit boxes and well-equipped hotel fitness centres — there are options for different needs and budgets.
Types of Fitness Venues
Gyms
Several independent gyms operate on the island, serving both local residents and tourists. Typical equipment: cardio machines (treadmills, bikes, ellipticals), free weights, resistance machines. Air conditioning is standard in any decent facility.
Cost: single visit — ฿150–300. Monthly membership — ฿1,500–3,500 depending on the facility.
Hotel Fitness Centres
Larger resort hotels (Four Seasons, Conrad, Anantara, Intercontinental) have modern fitness centres. Access is usually included for guests; non-guests may purchase day passes or memberships.
Day pass (where available): ฿400–1,000. A practical option if you're staying nearby and want to combine training with pool access.
CrossFit and Functional Training
CrossFit boxes have appeared on Samui in recent years and are popular with expats and long-term residents. Small group format (6–15 people), daily changing WOD. Pre-booking required.
Cost: ฿400–600 per session; class packs reduce the per-session rate.
Group Classes
Many fitness centres offer group classes: Pilates, step aerobics, Zumba, strength classes. Fixed schedules — confirm in advance or check the venue's website.
Where Infrastructure Is Located
- Chaweng — highest concentration. Several independent gyms, CrossFit boxes, hotel fitness centres.
- Lamai — some options, fewer than Chaweng.
- Bophut — 1–2 gyms catering mainly to expats living in the north.
- Maenam and other northern areas — limited; residents typically travel to Chaweng or Bophut.
Outdoor Training
- Running. Beach running is standard. Chaweng, Lamai, Maenam, and Bophut beaches offer sufficient space. Best before 7:30 AM before the heat sets in.
- Calisthenics. Some public beaches have outdoor pull-up bars and parallel bars.
- Swimming. Open water and villa pools. Many long-term residents build daily routines around swimming.
- Cycling. Routes exist, though the hilly interior and traffic in tourist zones require caution.
Training in the Tropics
- Timing. Before 9 AM or after 5 PM. Midday outdoor training leads rapidly to overheating.
- Hydration. Fluid loss during exercise in tropical heat is significantly higher than in temperate climates. Electrolyte sports drinks and coconut water are good options.
- Adaptation. Performance drops during the first 7–14 days training in heat. Normal — don't push volume and intensity until fully acclimatised.
- Sun protection. SPF 50+ on exposed skin is mandatory even on overcast days.
Fitness and Villa Rental
Many Samui villas include private pools suitable for lap swimming or aqua exercises. Some villas provide or rent bicycles and SUP boards. If training infrastructure matters to you, confirm equipment availability or proximity to gyms when choosing a villa.
