Seafood is Samui's greatest culinary asset. The island is surrounded by the Gulf of Thailand; fishing boats go out every night, and their catch reaches markets and restaurants by morning. Freshness is high and prices are a fraction of what comparable seafood costs in Europe.

What's Caught in Samui's Waters

  • Tiger and king prawns — the most popular seafood on the island. Served grilled, in curry, or with garlic-soy sauce.
  • Squid and octopus — grilled, deep-fried in batter, or in Thai sauce.
  • Mussels and oysters — steamed or baked with cheese and garlic.
  • Fish — red snapper, barramundi, and sea bass are common. Served whole, steamed with spices or grilled with lemongrass.
  • Crab — soft-shell (tempura-fried) and hard-shell (cooked in coconut curry).
  • Scallops and lobster — available at mid-range and upscale restaurants.

Where to Buy Fresh Seafood

Fresh fish and seafood are sold at the island's morning markets. The largest is in Nathon (the island's administrative centre), open from early morning. There's also a small fish market near the shore in Mae Nam. If you're renting a villa with a kitchen, buying directly at the docks is a rewarding option.

Seafood at Restaurants

Many restaurants on Samui — especially in Bophut and Chaweng — operate a tank-selection format: you choose a live lobster, crab, or specific fish; the weight and estimated price are confirmed; and it's cooked to order. This is a transparent and fair system — you pay for exactly what you see.

At fixed-menu restaurants, seafood is usually priced by weight or portion. A plate of grilled tiger prawns at a mid-range café typically runs 250–500 baht — considerably cheaper than equivalent dishes in Europe.

Practical Tips

On a tropical island, seafood spoils quickly. Favour places with obvious turnover — busy venues where dishes are cooked in front of you. Fresh is the standard at good restaurants; if you're unsure whether something is fresh or frozen, ask. Tuesday through Friday tends to be the best for freshness, following the nightly fleet runs. Mondays can see thinner market selections.
