Koh Samui Seafood Guide: What to Order, Where to Eat and What It Costs
Koh Samui seafood: tiger prawns, crab, lobster, squid. Where to find fresh fish, how to choose a restaurant, and what a good seafood dinner costs.
Koh Samui is a fishing island with centuries of maritime tradition. Seafood is caught every night, and by morning it appears in restaurants and markets. The freshness of seafood on Samui is not a marketing slogan — it's simply a geographic fact.
What Comes from Samui's Waters
In the warm Gulf of Thailand waters surrounding the island, fishermen catch:
- Tiger and king prawns — the most popular seafood among tourists. Large in size, slightly sweet flesh. Best preparation: grilled with garlic and butter.
- Blue crab (poo) — Thai crab with delicate white meat. Prepared as crab curry with curry powder (pu pad pong karee), stir-fried with ginger, or simply boiled. Price: ฿350–500 per piece.
- Lobster — a seasonal product, mainly caught off southern Samui's shores. Tourist restaurant prices are higher; the best value is at village fish restaurants in Mae Nam and Taling Ngam.
- Squid and octopus — affordable and delicious. Squid is deep-fried (pla muk tod), grilled with salt, or cooked in chili sauce. Price: ฿120–200 per dish.
- Mussels in the shell — steamed with lemongrass, ginger, and galangal, or pan-fried. Portion: ฿150–250.
- Fish: snapper, grouper, barracuda, tuna — choose fresh fish from the display, then specify the preparation: charcoal-grilled whole (pla pow), in three-flavour sauce (pla rad prik), or Cantonese-style steamed with ginger.
How to Choose a Good Seafood Restaurant
The golden rule: fresh fish on ice in front of the restaurant. If you see a display of live or chilled seafood, that's a good sign. Quality indicators:
- Fish eyes — clear, not cloudy
- Gills — bright red
- Smell — oceanic, not foul
- Mussels in shells — closed (if open and doesn't close when touched — avoid)
- Restaurant full of locals — a reliable indicator
Best Places for Seafood on Koh Samui
Mae Nam — the best area for seafood. Fishing villages, restaurants right on the water, fish and crab straight from the source. Lowest prices on the island among quality establishments.
Bophut (Fisherman's Village) — a picturesque fishing village with waterfront restaurants. A more "touristy" spot with slightly higher prices, but excellent atmosphere and quality.
Taling Ngam — a quiet southwest area with waterside restaurants. Ideal for a romantic seafood dinner with a sea sunset.
Lamai — many tourist-oriented seafood restaurants along the waterfront. Prices slightly higher, but good selection.
