Koh Samui is increasingly meeting the needs of vegetarians and vegans. The island's thriving wellness culture, yoga retreats and health-conscious visitors have created steady demand for plant-based food, and restaurants responded long ago.

Thai Cuisine and Vegetarianism

Traditional Thai food is more vegetarian-friendly than it looks. Many classic dishes are either meat-free by default or easy to adapt: pad thai can be ordered with tofu instead of chicken, green curry with vegetables, tom kha without the chicken. Key words to use: "jay" (เจ) — fully vegan without fish sauce, "mai sai neua" — no meat. Always alert your server and ask about fish sauce (nam pla) — it is in almost every Thai sauce by default.

Plant-Based Cafes and Restaurants

Chaweng and Lamai have a handful of dedicated vegan cafes where the menu runs from acai bowls and granola at breakfast to chickpea burgers and coconut-milk curries at dinner. Around Bophut and Maenam you will find places oriented toward long-term residents — menus are more varied and prices are moderate. Breakfast: 150–250 baht; lunch with a drink: 250–400 baht.

Night Markets and Food Courts

Samui's night markets are surprisingly good territory for vegetarians. Noodles with tofu, egg fried rice, fresh fruit, coconut cream desserts. The Chaweng market and the Bophut Friday Night Market almost always have dedicated "jay" stalls — look for the yellow flag. Market prices: 60–120 baht per dish.

Supermarkets and Self-Catering

Big C and Makro stock tofu, tempeh, soy milk and coconut yoghurt. Fresh produce is best at morning markets (Lamai, Maenam) where prices are two to three times lower than at tourist-facing shops. Coconuts and tropical fruits — mango, papaya, durian in season — are sold from roadside carts all over the island.

Yoga Retreats and Detox Centres

Many yoga centres and wellness retreats offer fully vegan or vegetarian meal plans as part of their programmes. If you are staying at a villa or regular hotel, the nearest wellness centre will often sell lunch or dinner to outside guests on request.
